OpenTranslationTools: Costing
Budgetting for Paid Translators
Although we encourage the volunteer model there are projects that are funded and there are projects that receive funds from time to time to do a specific translation. This gives a rough outline of how to cost such a translation.
Calculation
- Words to translate = words from untranslated segments
- Words to review = words from segments matched through translation memory
- Cost = (Words to translate * Translation rate per word) + (Words to review + Revew rate per word)
- Days = Words to translate / Words per days
Rule of thumb
- Weeks = Words to translate / 5000
- Days = Words to translate / 1000 (many time 1500)
Calculating Costs
Translators will quote based on the number of source words to be translated:
- $5 / 100
- Or, $0.05 per word
Note: these are just for illustration purposes and we haven't complicated things by providing a different rate for pure review.
Using word counting tools you can determine the number of source words.
Words = untranslated + review
Words = 40 000 + 5 000
Your final costing would then be:
Cost = 45 000 * 0.05
= $2 250
Calculating Time
Assuming that you need to translate 45 000 words do the following. Either,
- Find out how many words the translator can translate per day:
1300 words per day
Days = 45 000 / 1300
= 35 days
= 7 weeks
- Convert to the rule of thumb guides above:
Days = 45 000 / 1000
= 45 days
Weeks = 45 000 / 5000
= 9 weeks
